Selvedge Denim Pants

Denim Selvedge (Self - Edge) or raw denim has returned to the public conciousness thru the years and with the trend of denim being used all aspects of fashion, from shirts to jackets to the timeless jeans. There are many types of denim being released and the types of ways they are processed and treated have given people more choices on both fit and texture of the denim one can wear. Selvedge denim are made thru old style shuttle looms in Japan. The process is that the looms uses one tread that reaches from side to the other, while in doing so it is able to circle around that makes the stripe we see in the cuffs, also known as the selvedge stripe. The selvedge stripe is placed with a red thread, which is still used today to show the craftsmanship of the denim. Though wearing selvedge denim is both taxing and expensive at times, due to it being heavy, there are now brands which offer lighter versions along with them being softer than the original along with being made into slimmer and tappered fits. One of the affoardable brands are Uniqlo and H&M that offer high quality selvedge denim. Though I suggest purchasing one from either Uniqlo or H&M and break 'em in yoursleves and in the end they'll look like a $200 jeans.

The thing about raw denim though is that they require a little more maintinence than the regular manufacture denim. From the time the dye bleeds from any liquid made contact on the denim will ruin your shoes, especially those white kicks, to your shirt tail. So some advice on wearing them and drying them,

1 Flipping up the hem. It is also a way to show of the detailing of the selvage while also keeping your shoes safe.
2. If your jeans gets wet and you can remove them and leave them to dry do it. You'll just end up with indigo dye all over you clothes and wherever you seat.
3. Another way of drying them is just patting a rag on the pants to get them dry. Scrubbing them down would be removing the indigo on the pants.
4. If the dye does go onto your clothes, bleach them.

Dont be overly protective of your pair of selvedge denim though, have fun with them. In the end you'll be creating a personalized pair of pants that scream who you are.
